If your passion is automobiles, you are probably interested in knowing how the wonderful world of mechanics works. Most owners of cars or trucks want to take advantage of their free time to repair, restore or maintain it either by hobby or to save money in a mechanical workshop. But do you know which are the most important tools (almost mandatory) that you should have in your garage?
Here we will show you a list of the top 10 and we will explain why.
Here Are The Top 10 Tools
1) Ratchet Set
This basic tool associated with your socket wrenches will allow us to remove any nut or screw from our vehicle and it is probably the one we will use the most. We recommend you to buy a complete set of at least 94 pieces as it has all the extensions, joints and some screw tips such as flat, star, Allen and Torx tips.
- Ratchet set is available with different drive sizes — 1/4-inch, 1/2-inch, and 3/8-inch. This helps in operating different size sockets.
- A lot prefer to operate with a geared drive. Those with a higher tooth count let you operate the tool with a smaller swinging motion. This is really useful when there’s little room to move the handle.
- Gearless models operate with a roller bearing and require smaller movements to turn fasteners than a geared drive
- Many ratchets have a lock that prevents the socket from falling off or sticking on the fastener. There is a quick-release button that disengages the lock
- Flexible-head or Jointed ratchets allow you to work in tight areas by enabling you to adjust the angle of the handle
2) Combination Spanner Set
These set with two heads per spanner is important as it does not leave gaps between its different sizes. They are necessary for multiple tasks while we lose or tighten a screw, a nut or other. They are necessary for many places where the ratchet is not designed to enter.
3) Screwdriver Set
You must have a good set of screwdrivers with different flat and star tips. This helps to disassemble or assemble many pieces especially in works inside the vehicle. It is also useful in many cases as “lever” to disassemble something.
This tool is indispensable because many times when removing a screw that has been rusted or badly positioned, it does not want to leave, it will need a slight “push”.
5) Universal Plier
It serves for many functions such as holding small objects, cutting wires, modeling electrical conductors and also serves to bend soft pieces of metal.
6) Hydraulic Jack
An important part of the work begins when you need to lift the car because sometimes you need to get underneath to remove a screw, nut or take out a wheel. The jack that comes with all cars and trucks are flimsy and should only be used in case of emergency because it serves only to lift a wheel. That is why if we are going to lift the vehicle completely and work a few hours, you will need a solid hydraulic jack, with a good point of support and that supports at least 2 tons (2,000 kg).
7) Jack Stand
You will need at least 2 Jack Stands to keep the vehicle elevated and this will help not to overload the hydraulic jack, it also helps to distribute the weight of the vehicle more safely and uniformly.
8) Torque wrench
The nuts and bolts should not be tightened too hard as this leads to the thread being damaged or broken. That’s why each piece of the car has a specific tightening torque and you need the torque wrench to be able to tighten them with the proper force (the measurement is in Newton-Meter).
9) Tester or Multimeter
If we need to do some electrical work on the vehicle, this portable tool is used to directly measure the active electrical quantities such as currents, voltages, resistances, capacities, etc.
10) Gloves and Safety Glasses
In many cases, you will need mechanical gloves to have better grip and not get your hands dirty or hurt. The safety glasses are used in case you need to be under the vehicle and when assembling, disassemble any part do not drop dirt or impurities in the eyes.
